How should UBF's case be handled? I can only say how I would ideally like it to happen. I will describe this ideal situation as follows:
Every UBF leader would acknowledge the past and current abuses of UBF. They would vow to discontinue all forms of abuse and false teaching. They would explain to their chapter members and Bible students why what they were doing is wrong.
Then all UBF members would attend several seminars to learn about the false teachings UBF preached and the unethical coercive methods UBF used. These seminars could easily be organized by a cooperation among former members, exit counselors, thought reform consultants and theologians. Then, the leaders would realize the full extent of their wrongdoing. Each would, in view of past wrongdoing, make a vow never to be in a position of spiritual authority again.
Then a meeting would be held between UBF members, former members, and an arbitrating third party (probably thought reform consultants) to decide what should be done with UBF offering money (the mother lode in Benoit), and real estate. I think all UBF real estate should be sold. Then all the UBF money should be put into a fund that would help pay for the counseling and psychiatric treatment of members and former members.
At this point, UBF would officially dissolve itself. Each UBF member would be encouraged to attend a church or ministry of his/her own choosing. However, members could continue to meet together in support groups, which would be facilitated by thought reform consultants.
Then I will be happy and I will not have to wake up every day knowing that hundreds of innocent, well-minded young people are being brutally abused and deceived by UBF.
