Thanks Bob. Some comments.

I was pressured into attending a daily 6:00am morning prayer meeting. Morning is the time of day we should give to God, not the church.

I believe the purpose of this practices is 1) accustom people to spend as much time as possible in the center, not with the family or alone with God (cult mind control does not work well if people are too much away from the center), 2) to control people - they don't believe that people will pray in their homes voluntarily - 3) to make those people proud who come every morning at 6am and to make those people feel guilty who fail doing so for whatever reason - UBF cultivates an atmosphere where honor or fear are the main motivations, not love. By the way, our chapter director altered the morning prayer hour step by step until it was nearly completely the same as the Sogam sharing sessions in the evening. You are right, the main intend is not to help you spending time with God, but to help you spend time with UBF and UBF ideology. Even before our morning session was transformed into a sogam session, and when we had "prayer alone," UBF was always in the center. Our prayer was based on UBF prayer topics (first prayer topic was always Samuel Lee, second prayer topic was some number of "sheep"), it was also based on the UBF "daily bread" booklet, and it was done in a way that everybody could see you praying in the center, whereas Jesus said we should pray in our room and not so that we can be seen and become proud of it.

I was asked to sell my house, and move closer to the university. ... I was told to find a place near the university and let one of the missionaries move in with me. ... It is not right for a "pastor" to pressure someone to sell their house for the gain of the church.

The ironical thing is that while UBF leaders demand this from the rank-and-file members, they practice the opposite themselves. They take offering money to buy themselves houses. Nick, can you repost the list with Chicago UBF leaders who have bought houses with UBF money? Samuel Lee of course being one of them.

I was told that a woman in Korea was praying for me to be her husband. ... The truth is my director arranged it

I was told the same about my wife, who was from a different chapter, and the same was told to my wife. Later, when we openly spoke with each other, we found that both chapter directors lied to us. None of us had prayed or even thought about each other until our chapter leaders had told us to do so. As long time and indoctrinated UBF members we knew pretty well that it was not our sake to chose a marriage partner, but we had to wait for the orientation director. Whenever anybody choses ("prays for") a marriage partner on his own, he will get into BIG trouble in UBF, such marriages and ideas are not allowed in UBF. Nonetheless, interestingly, we not only were made believe, but really believed the other one had made the choice on his/her own. You learn to not really think about what happens and whether it is plausible or not. You learn to live with inconsistencies and switch off thinking whenever things do not fit together, swallowing these inconsistencies "by faith."
