Subject: Rugby XIII In Belgium

Dear Sir/Madam,

My name is Paul Cartman and I am a representative of the Belgian Rugby League Federation. Rugby League is a 13 a side game and is said to be a faster more powerful sport than Rugby Union. We are looking to start playing Rugby League in the Rugby Union off-season for two reasons. Firstly, it will give RU clubs an oppurtunity to try and play Rugby League at a competitive level and secondly it will not disrupt your first choice sport RU league season.

2006 is just a preparation and promotional year for the BRLF. In 2006 we are looking to give clubs like yourselves the oppurtunity to try Rugby League for the first time. We are also looking to meet with Dany Roelands, my RU equivalant in order to make sure that we are of the same understanding that both sports can play alongside each other in the same country successfully. In 2007 we are hoping to enter two Belgian RL teams into International RL tournaments in places such as York, Rotterdam and Lezignan and our aim is to have a International 9s Tournament held in Belgium in 2008. We are also looking to play 2 or 3 full internationals against nations such as Holland, Germany, Serbia, Greece, Italy or Georgia in 2007. 2007 is also the year that we hope to have a full league and cup domestic season and we hope that it is clubs such as yourselfs taking part and maybe winning them. Later this year we are hoping to have RL sessions for the general public in Belgium and we'd be delighted if your clubs players could take part. Nothing is yet set in stone but this will definately take place. This may also include giving Rugby Union coaches the oppurtunity to gain League coaching qualifications. In 2008 we are looking to introduce RL to schools in Belgium and by this time we would hope that your clubs would also look at running an RL junior section at your club. All of the above targets I have mentioned above are very much reachable and are all needed to be done if we are to reach our primary target of taking part in the RL World Cup 2012 qualifiers and maybe qualifiying for the finals.

Rugby League and Rugby Union have many links that show both codes can work successfully together. Harlequins, the famous Union club also from early 2006 incorporated a Harlequins RL club which competes in the European Super League and the Challenge Cup, two of Rugby Leagues biggest competition in the Northern Hemisphere. In 2005 Leeds Rhinos RL club and the England RU team held a joint training session together from which both teams took many positives from the day. There are hundreds of players and coaches who have taken part in both codes successfully including, Shaun Edwards, Jason Robinson, Lote Tuqiri, Wendell Sailor and Mat Rogers. The BRLF and Belgian RU can work together in the following ways:

Players playing both codes can only help increase players skill levels.
Marketing, Fundraising and Promotional ideas
Use of facilities- RL clubs would use RU facilities and RU clubs would benefit from this financially e.g bar takings, fundraising.
Coaching methods and ideas
We hope that you have enjoyed reading about our plans for the future and we are looking forward to many of you giving RL a go at your club. We have an RL information pack to give you an insight into the game and we would be grateful to send this out to you at your request. We would be grateful if you would talk to the board members, coaches and players at your club about giving our sport a go and comeback to us with your thoughts. Please contact us as soon as you get this e-mail with your views and we look forward to hearing from you soon. Remember RL and RU can work together, just give it a TRY.If you are a player, coach or just wanting more information please E-Mail belgianrl@mail.com

Yours In Sport

Paul Cartman
