Subject: Unemployment Rate in England at Record Highs!

Labour Market Statistics
December 17 2008 - The unemployment rate rose to 6.0% - up 0.4% over the quarter and 0.7% on last year. 29.4 million people were in work in the period August to October according to the labour force survey (LFS). The downturn in the economy continues to have an impact on employment figures - down by 115,000 on the quarter, but still up by 57,000 on the last year.

The working age employment rate is 74.2% - down 0.4% on the last quarter and down 0.4% on the last year.

ILO-defined unemployment in August to October was 1.9 million (6.0%) - up by 137,000 unemployed on the quarter and 238,000 from this time last year.

The claimant count for key out-of-work benefits was 1,071,900 in November - up by 75,700 on last month, and up 257,500 on last year.
