Subject: It is a disgrace that the teach lowest common denominators in school, don't you think? The educators are teaching students about vulgar, improper and imaginery things. What a waste of time!

In reply to: Hillary has done exactly the same thing; what a nasty hypocrite! 's message, "Re: This act of desperation was extremely dirty and underhanded. The Clintons have always aimed for the lowest common denominator and yes they are absolutely trying to get the bigot vote and the dumb vote." on Mon, February 25, 2008 1:23:54

In mathematics, the lowest common denominator or least common denominator (abbreviated LCD) is the least common multiple of the denominators of a set of vulgar fractions.

Personally I think that neither vulgar fractions nor improper fractions have any place in school. It is disgraceful that students are taught to be vulgar and improper.

Also I can't stand imaginary numbers either. Why do teachers waste time teaching students about numbers that don't even exist? Why don't they concentrate on the REAL world?

Well, I would say more, but right now I have packed my bags and am heading out the door.

I am about to catch a plane to Georgia. I am looking for a soul to steal and I have an appointment with some braggart named Johnny who thinks he is the cat's meow when it comes to fiddle playing. Well I'm going to beat his brains in and then his soul will be mine!

It is the smallest positive integer that is a multiple of the denominators. For instance, the LCD of

is 36 because the least common multiple of 12 and 18 is 36. Likewise the LCD of

is 12. Using the LCD (or any multiple of it, such as the product of the denominators) as a denominator enables addition, subtraction or comparison of fractions:

The lowest common denominator of two vulgar fractions can be found by calculating the least common multiple of their denominators.

Some K-12 math standards such as the latest revision of the NCTM math standards and reform mathematics textbooks created since the 1990s de-emphasize or omit coverage of the LCD entirely in favor of finding any common, but not necessarily the lowest common denominator, or by using less powerful methods such as fraction strips or "benchmark" fractions. The "cross-multiply" method of comparing fractions effectively creates a common denominator by multiplying both denominators together.
