There were three little birds. Each one had a plan for living the perfect day.
The first little bird wanted to sit in the sun, on the knee of a good friend, and have his head rubbed until the feathers fell off.
The second little bird wanted to sit as near the first bird as he could and sing at the top of his lungs, but he did NOT want anyone to touch him.
The third little bird wanted to feed someone and to have that someone love her so much he would preen her little head as a sign of appreciation. She liked to sing all the time, even when she was eating or feeding a friend.
On Friday the third little bird set out to feed the first little bird, but because the first little bird only wanted to sit in the sun and have his head rubbed, he ran away screaming. The third little bird followed as fast as her tiny pink legs would carry her, hoping that the fist little bird might trip and she could stuff some food down his throat while he was screaming. Surely if she did this he would be thankful and preen her head! She sang every song she knew while she ran along, because she loved to sing so much and did not believe in wasting any opportunity to indulge.
The second little bird was clumsy, but because he wanted so much to be near the first little bird, he ran along after the second little bird. He did not sing his favorite songs to the first little bird though, because he was angry that the third little bird was already singing and also because he was so clumsy running that it was too hard for him to concentrate anyway. Instead the second little bird screamed at the top of his lungs for the first little bird to STOP! so that he could catch up and sing his songs properly.
Around and around the Two Rooms ran the three little birds. The first screamed for the second to leave him in peace, the second sang just because and the caboose hollered for everyone to stop so he could get off this crazy train and sing a proper song.
Just as the first little bird thought he could run no more the Big Brown Door opened up and a Horrible Pink Monkey came into the room. It boomed at the three little birds in its Horrible Pink Monkey voice to "Stop all that racquet!" and they were all startled into stillness, though the first little bird stopped so fast that the third little bird slid right into him, BUMP!
The Horrible Pink Monkey put a fat pink finger down near the floor and the three little birds hopped on. With thundering steps the Horrible Pink Monkey carried the three little birds to the windowsill where they hopped off the fat pink finger. They were so excited at the three perfect little seed cakes they found there that all three little birds forgot about sitting in the sun and getting petted, or feeding a friend or even singing to a friend. For each little bird everything in the world disappeared except its own special seed cake.
Soon the three little birds were done with their cakes and had time to preen and take a little nap. The first little bird liked to take his nap in the sunshine on the knee of a good friend though, so he set off in search of his friend. The third little bird was too full to take a nap yet, so she set out to feed the first little bird, but because the first little bird only wanted to sit in the sun and have his head rubbed, he ran away screaming...
