I’m a UK citizen, but I am deeply concerned about the outcome of the US Election 2004 as I know it will have a massive impact on the rest of the world. I know that the domestic policies of the next US president will not affect me directly (for example, if Bush gets re-elected, as a UK citizen I will still be able to have an abortion legally, and not be forced to find a “back-street” clinic). Nevertheless, the US foreign policies directly affect us - we are all living under increasing threats of terrorism.
Bush is not winning the “war on terror” – because of his actions, terrorism has increased. He has a “gung-ho” attitude to sorting out world problems and supposed threats to the US. As it has now been proven, Iraq was never a threat to the US or any country – the UN sanctions were successful in preventing Iraq from manufacturing WMDs – George W Bush knew that Iraq was essentially defenceless. Before the war, United Nations (UN) weapons inspectors reported that there were no WMDs in Iraq. George W Bush blatantly ignored this fact, which just provides more evidence that his true motive for the war was to take control of the Iraqi oil supply.
The world is not a safer place now – it is far more dangerous – all thanks to George W Bush. Incidentally, the US tops the WMD charts – the numbers of WMD held by countries such as North Korea and Iran are negligible compared to the numbers held by the US. If a country feels threatened, as so many do as a result of current US foreign policies, it will be more inclined to develop these weapons.
Kerry, on the other hand, has vowed to forge new alliances with countries that are now at odds with the US as regards to the Bush administration’s foreign policies. He will work with the UN as a full partner, and use diplomacy rather than force as a primary tool.
No politician is perfect, but I know I will feel a lot safer with a President Kerry running the US.
The following is a list of marginal states:
Arizona (-4.12%)
Arkansas (-4.79%)
Colorado (-3.71%)
Florida (1.33%)
Iowa (2.11%)
Louisiana (-7.32%)
Maine, 2nd CD (5.74%)
Michigan (7.08%)
Minnesota (6.70%)
Missouri (-2.13%)
Nevada (-1.86%)
New Mexico (3.38%)
New Hampshire (2.17%)
North Carolina (13.13%)
Ohio (-1.58%)
Oregon (5.02%)
Pennsylvania (5.94%)
Tennessee (-3.12%)
Virginia (-6.06%)
Washington (9.43%)
West Virginia (-5.17%)
Wisconsin (3.40%)
If you live in any of these states, your vote will literally make a world of difference.
Thanks for reading the post of a concerned UK citizen,
Rose :)
