Hi guys, I just thought I'd share with you all something that happened to me a few days ago. Okay here goes:
Lately we had this rain storm that lasted about a week which was cool for
a change. Anyway we went down to parky (okay you need to know what I'm talking
about. Park Beach is the beach right down from our street, I say it's a thirty
second walk but it's more like probably two minutes walk, but two minutes just
doesn't do it justice to how close it is, because we can hear the beach from
our house if it's big, anyway back to what I was saying, so it's called Park
Beach but we call it parky just because Australian's always abbreviate
everything so when I say parky that's what I'm talking about)yeah where
was I, yeah we went down to parky during the storms and the surf was
absolutely ridiculous! All the beaches were closed because it was too
dangerous, The surf was huge, I have a picture from the newspaper that
I'll scan and put it on the web. So we went out and it was really messy
but huge, really hard to catch anything. We went out the back (out the
back is past the breakers where you catch the waves just to let you know)
so we're out the back and my roomate catches the first wave and we are
laughing our heads off because it's just so big and he can't ride it because
they're just not able to be ridden, he gets munched and we all go back in
to shore. It was fun but just too dangerous, lots of rips and just messy.
But that's not my story, that's just the lead up so read on for
the incredible story.
If you notice I will be writing this story in first person and third person whenever
I feel just to make it more dramatic. Okay hope you enjoy.
Okay are you ready, if you can't tell I'm still really amped about this happening
so read on. First I'll set the scene. It's about 4:00pm on a Friday afternoon,
the day is perfect, not a cloud in the sky. Matt and his room mate Luke don't have
uni because we have friday's off, because we have both packed all our classes into
the first four days of the week. So they have already gone for a morning surf and
relaxed by watching two of the five weekly videos they rented for a great value price
of $5. First they watch Trainspotting which has been viewed by both of them a while ago
but is great catching up on the movie again for a second time as many funny bits have
been forgotten. They then resort to watching Jerry Maguire which is always a great
choice. So It's four O'clock and they decide it's time for another surf. The reason
they do this is because they are so stoked that the past weeks storms has totally
changed parky and it has formed a big sandbar not far out from shore, this is good,
this is very good, This means that not only is parky just a great place to go and
hope for good waves, but it almost always is pumping because of the sandbar. So
they go down knowing there are going to be good waves and they have a session of
getting big barrells and huge airs (okay not really, we suck at surfing but hey, isn't
half of being a good bodyboarder talking it up? okay then, that's what I'm trying to
do, some people call it lying but I call it decorating the truth) anyway they have a
pretty good session and most of the other surfers have gone in because the son is
setting and it's about to get dark. This is when one of the most thrilling thing
happens to me and Luke. He's paddling out about six feet in front of me and I
have my back to him setting up for a wave when I hear him scream the word that
stops the heart beat of any surfer! FINS! I am trying to comprehend if infact he's
actually screamed out fins or not! (now FIN! just would have been bad enough but
hearing him scream FINS! makes me think shit! these sharks are really trying to
surround us. So I turn around slowly and see that my worst nightmares are coming
true right in front of my eyes. I always think about sharks when I'm out
there but as long as you just put it out of your mind as soon as you think about it,
you just don't worry. So I've turned around on my board and see two fins coming towards
Luke. Just like in the movies right, really fast and straight at him. They kind of
separate and are about to go either side of him. By now they are 3 feet away
from him on either side and just in front of him. By now I'm shitting in my pants,
mainly because I'm only six feet away from luke which means that the shark on his
right is only nine feet away from me! I am starting to see my life flash before my
eyes and I pull my feet up on my board subconsciously. Then what happens next brings
the most relief and excitement over me ever. The two most beautiful dolphins jump out
of the water, do a little flip and go back under. I'm trying to be amazed but the
fact that we thought they were sharks two seconds ago is still playing on our minds
and our brains aren't going to believe our eyes straight away just because we want
to be sure. But it is absolutely amazing! These wild dolphins have just come in and
decided to play with us for a little while, We have both started to kind of catch
this udeveloped wave as a means of getting away from the "sharks" and they are on
this bit of swell and just riding it with us jumping in and out and almost smiling.
They both turn, go underwater again and then swim past me on either side just before
leaving out of site of us both. It was just amazing! The thing that was most
amazing was how close they were getting to us, If I wasn't so scared about the whole
shark thing at first. We could have touched them. But I was honestly still
shaken up by the "sharks" that I was most excited when we were back on shore away
from the "sharks" that I could scream and smile ear to ear with amazement that we
had just swam with wild dolphins for a short time. So yeah that's my story, sorry
it took so long, I just love to ramble. I hope you enjoyed it.
