Subject: My Saturday

I had the coolest day in southern Indiana this afternoon! Since I have this weekend to myself, I didn't want to waste it bumming around the house. The weather was decent (for December in Indiana, that is!), but it was supposed to turn bitterly cold this coming week. SO, I decided to get the Corvair out of the garage for one last "fling" before she hibernates for the winter. My mission? The Tulip Trestle! This Greene County viaduct was completed in 1906. Locally known as "Tulip Trestle", it is 180 feet high and 2,295 feet long making it the longest train trestle in the U. S. And it is out in the middle of NO WHERE! You have to take some twisty, curvy country roads to get to it...where you then have to access a gravel road to pass underneath it. I don't think I've seen such an awe-inspiring structure as this in a looooong time. I found a site with a wide photo of it. It's at: http://www.trainweb.com/gcdra/davehonan/inrd/inrd-tulip-trestle-combined-11-05-01-m.jpg. I know it's a long URL, but it is a really good shot. I must've taken 15 pictures of this beast while I was there. My only regret is that a train didn't cross it while I was there. But based on the condition of the tracks down the road, this thing is still being used. Once I get my pics developed, I'll post them up on my website. This was such a great drive down there.....the Road Maven strikes again!
