I'd be glad to enlighten you!! :) I could go on and on about roads, the U.S. Highways, evil Interstates, but I'll keep it simple!

"The" Route 66 from Chicago to L.A., was a U.S. Highway, which has been officially "decertified." U.S. Highways have the white and black shields (as opposed to the evil blue and red Interstate shields).

The CT 66 I was talking about is a "state" highway. Lots of states have a "State Route 66," which doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the former U.S. 66. For example, in CT, it is just a typical state road, and of course, it's nowhere near the "other" Route 66! But it was a fun drive, pretty scenic in the Connecticut woods, a few nice shops, and there was a neat drive-in restaurant called "Happy Days," but it was closed for the winter. :( They even had a U.S. 66 shield on the building! Hehe I have pictures, but I forgot to scan them. I'll be putting them up soon, so check back on the site!

So, as I said, U.S. 66 is no longer officially a U.S. Highway, but the majority of the actual roadway still exists and can be driven. Since it's not officially "U.S. 66" anymore, there are no shields. So people have retraced various alignments of it created maps and guidebooks to assist travelers in their journey. Also, all the states now have signs marking it "Historic Route 66"). In some areas of the 8 U.S. 66 states, it is now designated as state road 66; Kansas, California and Oklahoma come right to my mind right off the bat. The other areas of U.S. Route 66 where it exists, it's sometimes a "frontage" road for the Interstate, or was incorporated into the Interstate...sometimes it's a quiet country road, many other times it's a "Main Street" through small towns, or larger cities! In Chicago, it goes right through the heart of downtown. In California, it goes through the Mojave desert, L.A, and Hollywood! That's the difference between Route 66 and the interstate. If you could stay awake, you could just drive on the monotonous Interstate for days without stopping. But Route 66 is so diverse...it followed many kinds of roads, through so many kinds of places, which is why it's so interesting to travel, even today! Lots of motels, diners, roadside attractions and neon!! Cities, small towns, deserts, mountains...it's all there!

Does that help? Gee, I thought I was going to keep it simple! LOL!! I could have gone on longer! hehe
