" Nigara's rink renovation will actually shrink its capacity to 1200 "

While this hockey site said capacity might be reduced to 'around 1,500' ( as opposed to 1,200 ), I saw a related story the other day where Niagara's AD indicated final capacity is TBA and could be 2,000 depending on final studies/plans/funding.

Niagara's Dwyer Center is actually a two-rink complex....a main arena complete with a large and impressive glass facade lobby, a large food court/concession area, a university fan/clothing shop and a hockey equipment/skate shop. The attached 2nd arena actually looks very similar to the Hart rink. It has separate seating for about 500-600 on one side ( ala Hart ) plus an attractive glass enclosed 2nd floor lounge at one end overlooking the ice surface. As opposed to Hart, this complex is only about 8 years old.

And while HC may hype the use of the 12,000-seat ( for hockey ) Centrum, Niagara can easily trump that with their access to the 19,000-seat HSBC Arena in Buffalo, a venue with NHL level amenities. Niagara can also 'sell' the Niagara Falls tourist angle for weekend visits by visiting teams and their fans.

Niagara doesn't have HC's academics and they do have geography flaws versus the existing ECAC members. But unlike HC, Niagara is firmly committed to it's program financially and has a track record of success with national rankings, some impressive recent wins ( @ Michigan ! ) and two NCAA appearances - one of which was a Final 8 run a few seasons ago.

Niagara gives/uses athletic scholarships. I don't know how that fact will effect the application process.

We'll see but I have big doubts that Yale, Harvard, Brown, etc. are going to let Niagara -- the selectivity/academic gap is massive -- totally agree that we must make a serious committment and like you I have some doubts but will give them a pass for now and see what happens
