Subject: Women's Verbal

Whitney Morrow, a 5'10 shooting guard from South Portland, Maine has committed to Holy Cross. She is a rising senior. This is an outstanding pickup for Bill Gibbons. Whitney is believed to be the first player from Maine to attend the prestigious Nike All American Camp for the top 80 players in the country which just concluded in St. Louis, Missouri. She was a teammate of incoming frosh Laura Aloisi on the New England Crusaders. Whitney will upgrade the athleticism on the squad (as will McLaughlin and Aloisi) tremendously. She can easily slap the backboard on layups, so needless to say she has some hops. A backcourt of her, McLaughlin and Aloisi will spell disaster for the rest of the patriot league. It's a good thing Gibbons picked up on this gym rat early because all of the big programs have jumped in on her.
Great job Coach Gibbons, and congrats Whitney.

With bigger programs chasing her - do you know which ones? - there is still some risk.

Thoughts...

That being said, sounds like a great get by Coach Gibbons!

Cheers.

the alumni and Coach Gibbons that he will take the necessary steps to ensuring her signing with the Cross in November.

obviously the two aren't comparable but I wonder what Coach Pearl was told re: the ECAC, when they got him to stay.

Cheers.

BC, Villanova and Maryland amongst others. She wanted to decide early and being close to home is important to her.

Looks like PC, Michigan State and UMass were also recruiting her.

Cheers.

This is great news about Morrow. HC has three quality people in these girls and they know how to win! With the problems with hockey you would think the sky is falling. The Cross is a great academic school and the fact that these three talented athletes chose Holy Cross is a testament to what is going on in the woman's basketball program. Great things are ahead and Coach Gibbons is to be congratulated. McLaughlin stuck her neck out first and commited early and by doing so she made it easier for Aloisi and Morrow to follow suit. Holy Cross is a special place and these girls will be a tremendous asset to the Cross. All three of them could have gone to big time basketball schools but they decided Holy Cross was the place for them. If your from the Cross be proud you got yourself some winners.

will this recruit add much needed diversity to this program? There are more African Americans participating in the NASCAR circuit then what is going on with this program.

"we do not need diversity"- obviously the women's basketball program agrees with this pathetic statement. It is quite evident this program needs something more then it has.

HC04,the idea is to have a winning program regardless of the so called diversity that you seem to feel is needed. If HC had a program with all diversified students and were winning that would be great,a program with all non-diversified players that is winning would be great also.A program of mixed students that is winning would be great.Notice the word WINNING in all the above statements, regardless of the makeup winning and having a team that enjoys playing with each other and making each other better is the ideal to strive for,not diversity for diversity sake alone.

Interesting fodder but Id be careful '04- I've addressed concerns with this matter and became the anti-HC right away.. I am not an alum so maybe you'll be given more rope. Nomar, I do believe the essence of the college experience is what happens in the classroom and off the court. Athletics, while I believe an important ingredient lending to the experience, is often viewed as a snapshot of the student body.. Many posters have chastized other schools (all together now.. BOSTON COLLEGE)for the personell they put forth on their teams and generalize about the rest of the institution following those ways. I am not a fan of women's basketball in general however did attend a few games last year.. It is rather blatent that there is no representation of ANY diversity in the program.. nor does there seem to be any urgency to have some. I personally find Gibbons' theatrics on the sideline embarrassing (at one point needing to be held back from going after an opposing player)and frankly he overcoaches (changing defenses to the point his team had NO idea what they were supposed to be doing. Does this have anything to do with the above topic.. no... do I feel having black players on the team is important in the scope of winning.. not necessarily... but would it add to the college experience??? certainly.. and that is far more important.

I agree with your analysis of Gibbon's behavior, a disgrace to the HC community! Also, finally someone who also agrees with my own view of his coaching! He lacks the vision of what talent he has on his bench and fails to use it! He also has his playing 5 totally confused on many occasions (I saw a few games when he calls a guard over, who is also dribbling the ball, to converse with her about a play, and when the play is turned over he's screaming like a maniac!) I don't see how diversity will help in these situations! I believe Gibbon's is in for a rude awakening this fall with many schools now able to offer their own scholarships.

Thanks for the evaluation of Gibbon's defensive strategy. To paraphrase Jimy Williams: What CYO team do you coach?

You have to have strategy to evaluate before you can do so. When you have 2 players playing M to M and 3 in a zone OUT OF A TIME OUT as the coach screams from the sideline to "find someone" .. I think there are issues..

[> [> [> [> Re: MHMD As Coach -- MHMD, 23:39:36 07/20/04 Tue

Enough to know the following.. twice to be exact..
1. his team looked confused out of at least 3 time outs- not knowing what defense they should play..
2. On one occassion they held an opponent scoreless from the field playing zone for 4 minutes.. he goes M to M and the other team (league champs) scores 3 straight times to put the game out of reach..
3. this may be unfair as I did not see games consistently, but he seemed to pull players and take confidence away... a senior guard (who people in the stands said was a key figure on last years team)seemed to be playing great but was yanked.. again, this may be unfair as I dont know the history behind it but it was strange.
4. Sideline theatrics... this is pathetic... it really is... when a male coach has to be restrained from going after a female player...I find it absurd..
5. '04 has a valid point... why isn't there diversity in the program??? is it a conscious effort??? I just find it strange..
My question to you, Hart regular, who are you sitting with?? because many of the Hart regulars I sat with were voicing similar concerns as Ive put forth.. I give Coach Gibbons credit for scheduling good teams and obviously he's created quite a tradition at the school. I said in a post how impressed I was with how he stopped a press interview to kiss his son goodnight after a tough loss- obviously he's a family man and of high morals. If this is the level the program is striving to be at then he's a good fit.. to go to the next level doesn't seem like that much of a stretch .... except with the current coaching staff..

Hey MHMD.... I'm with you on these comments. Your critiques were right on. I was questioning HCFan as he seemed to be challenging your worthy comments.

How many women's games did HCFan really see is a good question.

Saw about 6/7 last year. Agree not a great team, but did he win 70% of his games over the first 19 years and then forget how to coach?
