Subject: Alumni Admissions Program Update

From my letter received today, with my comments in [].

"This year we received nearly 5,000 applications, representing one of the largest applicant pools in the history of the college [down from past 2 years of 5K+, with a positive spin to take attention away from a decline in apps]. Through a rather difficult decision making process, we admitted only 43% [up 1% from last year's acceptance rate]....711 students enrolled...[and] have an average combined SAT score of more than 1300, [seems like they don't want me or others being able to broadcast official scores anymore] and are within the top 5% of their graduating class."

Sounds like a solid class, despite INCREASED secrecy around SAT scores, which is still mindboggling. Also, the letter said to date there are 711 students enrolled...could mean HC might take more or lose a few to "summer melt". If the goal is to get acceptance rate down below 40%, much more needs to be done, but I am sure, as in all other areas at the Cross, there are "budget constraints".

Cheers.

Too bad the administration is unable to use a successful sports program, outside of hoops, to grow application numbers year over year, as several of our peer schools are able to do.

Just want to say that apps might have been below 5k for last year's class, but I am not positive of the number. Thus, while it is definitely a decline from 2 years ago, I cannot state with certainty whether it is down or up from last year. Again, here the Admissions Office appears to be controlling the numbers a lot more.

Cheers.

gee, perhaps they can find the time to alert Princeton Review of our current SAT average and let the rest of the alums know about it --

[> [> [> Third year straight of 1300+ SATs and... -- HC1843, 13:09:26 07/19/04 Mon

The PR site was just updated about 3-4 months ago with HC data of 1270, up from 1258. The 1258, I believe, was from the Class of 2005, which was characterized in a convesation I had with someone in admissions at the time, as a very off year that has not been repeated. Still trying to figure out the riddle of the reported 1270 score.

And I've tried to get admissions to update the data to no avail. God only knows why, in the competition to get the best students, we voluntarily handicap ourselves. It is one of life's greater mysteries.

Maybe NTK can get someone on the hill to do something about this.

Cheers.

that is pretty weak to continually under-report the SAT scores. who do you suggest emailing in the admissions office HC1843?

think: brick wall, your head, blood gushing...

but you can always try Anne McDermott - Head of Amissions - or James Richardson - author of the update letter and person in charge of the AAP.

Cheers.

My son ('02) and I both participated in the AAP for the first time this past year and so we have both received the letter that you quote. I haven't tried to bring about any change(s) in Admissions as I sense that alumni suggestions get short, if any, shrift.

I am available for problem solving Monday thru Friday at HC if they provide a house in Shrewsbury and a plane ride to and fro NJ on the weekends. Sounds do-able, right?

What is "average"? Median? Does the letter discuss the middle 50% range like every other college does now, or is the revelation of the bell curve too painful? It doesn't appear that we provide the same level of detail that every other college we compete with seems to be able to share on their website or in print. Look at Bucknell and Colagte sites for their incoming class profiles. Give our prospective students apples-to-apples information so they can make informed decisions, instead of having them think we are hiding something. Does the letter talk about how the % admitted number is managed through the waitlist admits? With those admits, there's 100% acceptance....without agreement to accept, no offer is extended. Wonder how many of those there are per class?

Apropos to the comments above about Lehigh and Lafayette, and perhaps showing a little Colgate envy; I think Colgate is a bit ahead of us, and the pack, and is a good model:

1. excellent athletic program, including facilities
2. more diverse student body, in many ways
3. better social options, including fraternities
4. ECAC HOCKEY!
5. higher average SATs
6. more competitive admissions
7. informative website!
8. noticeable lack of alums whining about the good old
days of D-1 football, athletic scholarships and Bob
Cousy basketball. Instead, they have gone about fixing
their programs because they have focused their energies
on.....
9. athletic boosters organizations, and funding teams
10. Oh yeah; it's more fun to go to school at a place where
the teams win!

We have some work to do, and some enthusiasm and pride to rebuild. Winning teams sure help.

11. Add supportive president to that list. I count my lucky stars we have a president who thinks D-I athletics belong on Colgate's campus. President Chopp could be found in the stands with the average fans at Andy Kerr stadium in December in the snow, not in the pressbox where the Western Illinios president wanted to sit! That's what I'm talking about.

It's all about leadership. I truly wish you the best HC.
