Subject: sad state of HC athletics

I have been away for a week and just read the news. Holy Cross, founded in 1843 and once a nationally known academic and athletic institution, beaten out by Quinnipiac -- pathetic indeed. Of course, the ECAC rejection is larger than just hockey. It's just one more nail in the HC athletics coffin. Personally, I really can't get that excited about PL basketball where if we're lucky we can get a 15 seed in the tournament. Hockey and perhaps lacrosse are two sports where I believe HC could compete nationally. But we don't. We should just go and play with Bowdion, Williams and the rest of the region's small schools. Sorry you have to witness this, Mr. Cousy and all the other great stars of HC past

An alternative viewpoint:

1. Football is on the ascendency with a new, enthusiastic coach and staff and an expected mechanism being put in place for a football endowment.

2. Basketball had an off year last year and, particularly the ladies, have some exciting young players coming in and the future looks bright. The men's team will be more focused now that we won't be trying to build the team around some key injured players. We will surprise some folks next year and there are lower, more realistic expectations of both teams.

3. Hockey has taken a disappointing turn but are we truly worse off thean we were a year ago? If an automatic bid to the NCAAs remain with our current conference, perhaps we can build the program albeit more slowly?

believe me Sader 1970 I want all our teams to do well -- but the downfall of Holy Cross athletics the last 25 years has been astounding -- I hope better times are ahead but I am doubtful that basketball for example can make that much headway in our current league -- on hockey, Coach Pearl will probably leave the program -- I know I have said this before but we will never compete nationally in basketball in the PL but hockey we have a chance in the right league that can attract better talent -- we had a good team last year but there was little doubt that while our hearts were big our talent was not at the level of the higher-end teams-- it's just frustrating that Holy Cross never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity -- our great college beat out by Quinnipiac -- I never thought I see the day --
