My son ('02) and I both participated in the AAP for the first time this past year and so we have both received the letter that you quote. I haven't tried to bring about any change(s) in Admissions as I sense that alumni suggestions get short, if any, shrift.

I am available for problem solving Monday thru Friday at HC if they provide a house in Shrewsbury and a plane ride to and fro NJ on the weekends. Sounds do-able, right?

What is "average"? Median? Does the letter discuss the middle 50% range like every other college does now, or is the revelation of the bell curve too painful? It doesn't appear that we provide the same level of detail that every other college we compete with seems to be able to share on their website or in print. Look at Bucknell and Colagte sites for their incoming class profiles. Give our prospective students apples-to-apples information so they can make informed decisions, instead of having them think we are hiding something. Does the letter talk about how the % admitted number is managed through the waitlist admits? With those admits, there's 100% acceptance....without agreement to accept, no offer is extended. Wonder how many of those there are per class?

Apropos to the comments above about Lehigh and Lafayette, and perhaps showing a little Colgate envy; I think Colgate is a bit ahead of us, and the pack, and is a good model:

1. excellent athletic program, including facilities
2. more diverse student body, in many ways
3. better social options, including fraternities
4. ECAC HOCKEY!
5. higher average SATs
6. more competitive admissions
7. informative website!
8. noticeable lack of alums whining about the good old
days of D-1 football, athletic scholarships and Bob
Cousy basketball. Instead, they have gone about fixing
their programs because they have focused their energies
on.....
9. athletic boosters organizations, and funding teams
10. Oh yeah; it's more fun to go to school at a place where
the teams win!

We have some work to do, and some enthusiasm and pride to rebuild. Winning teams sure help.

11. Add supportive president to that list. I count my lucky stars we have a president who thinks D-I athletics belong on Colgate's campus. President Chopp could be found in the stands with the average fans at Andy Kerr stadium in December in the snow, not in the pressbox where the Western Illinios president wanted to sit! That's what I'm talking about.

It's all about leadership. I truly wish you the best HC.
