Subject: How do you count hockey attendance?
In reply to: Gate Raider 's message, "Re: NCAA Attendance Figures for last season" on 23:37:57 06/18/04 Fri

I've only attended 3-4 HC hockey games but I can see a problem on tracking attendance. I don't know how they do it at Colgate or other places but the hockey games I went to at the Hart, the games were free and there were no tickets and no one counting or checking anyone at the door (an exception, if I recall correctly were the playoff games where I think I had to buy a ticket). In addition, people came and went throughout the game. Some obviously watched part of the game, some watched all but left to get refreshments and then came back.

So, I really don't think anyone at HC is trying to "hide" the attendance figures - the reality is, no one really knows what the true figures would be.

I would estimate the games I went to had an average of about 400 with a low of a couple of hundred and a high of, perhaps close to 800.

So all you Raider fans, how do you get an accurate count in Hamilton?

hockey attendance figures may be found on uscho.com -- we averaged about the same numbers as Quinnipiac and UCONN -- and let's remember that local Worcester area fan interest in teams from Atlantic is zero. ECAC teams will bring more local interest, especially for an area that is very much into hockey -- and looking at the attendance at Brown, for example, I have little doubt HC will draw more fans.

First, Colgate has lots of season ticket purchasers. They also have advance sale tickets as well as selling tickets at the door. There are ticket takers at the door and your hand is stamped for readmission in case you leave the arena for some reason. Actually, judging attendance is quite easy since the rink is usually totally full and with standing room only at the big games and during playoffs. The same goes for BB and football except for these sports you keep the ticket stub for readmission.
