Subject: New Assistant Coach

Does anyone know if they are close to naming a replacement for Tony Newsome?

Story is accurate. Just checked on google and princeton pilfered coach newsom from willard's staff. announced on princeton's website on june 23rd. hard to believe (facetious) that there is no announcement on the HC site. that guy Frank mastrandrea must be on drugs or asleep at the wheel - the HC site is a joke. it's like it was created in 1997 or something - just awful.
off the rant - it'll be interesting to see how willard replaces coach newsom, who was the primary recruiter. last year willard lost doherty, now he loses giovino and newsom in a 2 week strecth. the jerz addition will help, but we'll have too where willard looks to get some help.

How big of a job does Ralph's son have? You'd think he'd be a prime candidate unless he'd be stepping down in class.

Frank Mastrandrea has nothing to do with media relations or the athletics website.

As for Kevin Willard, I'd assume that his leading the team during Coach Pitino's absence due to illness, indicates he is the #1 assistant. The Cardinals are playing in the Maui Invitational in the upcoming season. What do you think he'd do?

Actually, the HC website lists him as the Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing and Media Relations. Read it for yourself NTK.

Although young Willard working for Pitino borders on nepotism, the perception might be that if Ralph brought him on board, it would REALLY look like it, regardless of how qualified he is.

Though I'd be all for it, I'm guessing it would be a step down for Ralph's son.

OK as long as we’re simply speculating, here's a real crazy idea …

Missouri just hired a couple of former head coaches as assisstants. George Blaney is at Uconn. We need an assistant with experience.

How about Jim O'Brien?

I know. O'Brien was just fired at Ohio State for a major rules violation, however prior to that he was squeeky clean at BC & Ohio State, good coach, and by all accounts a very good person.

We almost certainly couldn't pay him, which pretty much takes the idea off the table, but why not try. Could it be a beneficial relationship for both?

* He’s a short-term fix for HC in a year where 2 assistants have left and we’ll be recruiting to replace 4-5 scholarships. We need experience in coaching & recruiting.
* Gives time for the dust to settle for O’Brien.
* RW & he coached in the Big East against each other for a few years. Did they have a good relationship when there?
* Since he was fired for rules violation, not being a bad coach, O’Brien needs to rehab his image. Being part of HC/PL could help re-establish that reputation.
* Gets him back to Massachusetts – maybe his daughters are still in the area.

I know it's a BIG, BIG stretch, but sometimes you have to dream big and I'm an eternal optimist!
