The collar with the gray plastic box... try cracking it open. Sometimes these can contain location info. Try taking him to a vet or QHS to check for tattoos.
Other than that, it sounds like the plastic box might be a jolt collar. As in, he was in one of those "remote underground fence" things, ran, got jolted, and just kept running. I used to have a Great Dane/Rottweiller and that's what he did.
