In the past few weeks, we have being receiving numerous calls from people who want to get rid of litters of 5 week old puppies. These people were irresponsible, and did not have their dogs spayed, and now they either can't afford to look after all the puppies, or are just tired of cleaning up the mess. At 5 weeks old, puppies are just beginning to realize they are dogs...they might not be nursing too much anymore, but they are learning what they are by watching their Mother...Mom teaches them right from wrong, as do littermates when play gets too rough. A puppy taken away from it's Mom and littermates too soon can have major social problems that are difficult, if not impossible to correct. The majority of these dogs are then brought to our doorstep to find them another home. Sadly, many must be euthanized. So I'm asking you to refrain from taking that 5 week old puppy home with you. If you must have one, and support the irresponsible pet owner/back yard breeder, talk them into keeping the pup until it is at least 8 weeks old. Then take it straight to your veterinarian for a complete checkup, vaccinations and deworming. And PLEASE, have it spayed or neutered when the time comes (BEFORE the first heat in a female!). Or, if you now feel guilty about helping these people add to our pet overpopulation problem, go to your local humane society or dog pound and save a life!
