php and advanced scripting (anything to connect to a database, which is needed for a messageboard) costs more .... and you typically need more storage space, and if the board is popular you need more traffic space allowed as well .... if can get pricey .....

I imagine the UNT board or the bobcatfans.com board costs around 40 a month since they have a lot of members and high traffic and I personally have never noticed them being donw ......
