Technically, nothing "happened" to me... I just "developed" it.
"It"? Sciatica. As a result of scoliosis and/or unknown causes. I've had it since January or thereabouts, and it's just gotten worse and worse, this summer especially. I went from being able to function normally with some moderate pain (June) to not being able to function normally with major pain (now).

Sciatica is basically when the bottom disc in your back slips/drops/slides forward and down, right onto your sciatic nerve (which is the major nerve in your lower body). So it's like a pinched nerve times a billon. It's not fun. I have physiotherapy twice a week, chiropractic appointments once a week, specialist appointments at least twice a month... I've had a grand total of 13 sets of x-rays done this summer alone, and I'm waiting on a CAT scan (should be getting in done within a week and a half). I can't walk or stand straight anymore, I can't walk period for more than 20 feet or so at a time, I'm forbidden from walking up more than 8 steps at a time, and I'm not allowed to pick up anything over 10 pounds.

Actually, it's kind of weird, cuz when I was getting diagnosed in the beginning of July (or thereabouts), a doctor asked me if I'd ever heard of reactive arthritis. I was like, "umm... yeah, actually." And he said, "Well, I'm thinking that you may have it, because nothing's showing up on any of your x-rays, yet you have some pretty severe swelling in your spinal column and you have constant pain where there's no sign of injury." So I was a little freaked out by that, but I totally get what poor Daniel means when he says he has pain when he's lying totally still. It's a bad feeling. It's like, "ok... I'm NOT moving, and I hurt. And there's nothing I can do about it. No matter how I stand, lie, sit, whatever, I'm in pain."

Anywho... there's your explanation. Not fun, but I'll have to deal. There's not much anyone can do, save major back surgury or large doses of drugs (I'm dealing with option two at the moment).

J.
