Subject: My little Diorama review/rant

*NOTE: I’m NOT trying to bash Diorama or silverchair in ANY way. Just a few of my opinions on the direction silverchair is going with this album. It’s not a BAD direction, but it‘s definitely different.

Diorama I guess, in a way, was the album that I expected to follow Neon Ballroom. It has a new, totally different sound, it’s non radio friendly, and it’s an album I think only silverchair could make (although I didn‘t expect a positive outlook from Daniel). I’m enjoying it. Yet, there’s something non-silverchair about it. It seems like that youthful spark isn’t there anymore. I find it hard to believe that Daniel, Chris, and Ben have lost it at 22-years-old but, hey, they’ve been making music since they were how old?

I think up until now a little piece of silverchair’s music was still clinging onto Frogstomp and some teenage angst. Which wasn’t a bad thing. I think it was that teenage angst that I related to and it’s the reason I loved them. Diorama album is much more adult. They don’t sound 22-years-old. Most people in the music business are in the ballpark age of 22. And generally they’re just starting out. Not putting out their 4th album. I think silverchair is running out of gas. I’m not saying their going to split but they seem to have done everything after this. They‘ve gotten out of their teenage molds, now what? So in a way when I listen to Diorama I keep thinking, “Is this it?”. I keep getting this vibe of a band that’s tired and just done making music. Although Diorama has a new sound, it seems to not have that freshness of a new band anymore: new music, new singles, new look. Although Diorama indeed has all of those things, it just doesn’t feel like it to me. I think it’s because they have finally grown up. They are by no means old, but they seem like a band that’s going to appeal less and less to a teenage rock music audience.

Silverchair is slowly but surely losing their edge. If they keep going in the direction they are them being on rock radio is going to be laughable. Once again not necessary a BAD thing, but it seems to be happening. Daniel’s voice has turned melodic. I can’t hear that scratch in his voice that unquestionably labeled silverchair rock. Diorama seems to be more about melody and sound than lyrics. Only a few “OMG I wish I wrote that!” lyrics stick out in my head.

In short I think this album is definitely amazing. But something about this album doesn’t sit well with me. They seemed to abandon all of what silverchair was and started over. This once heavy, angry, rock band has turned into melodic, happy, hippy band. And I like what I hear from them. It’s just now I have to fill my musical void where silverchair was. And I’m afraid with that I may have to replace my favorite band.

(by the way: if your interested, this may be them)

The Strokes have been rocking my musical socks since silverchair has been gone....
