Yeah... the piercing that I changed the stud in was in the middle of my ear, so it didn't hurt TOO badly after I got it done- but yes, the non-flub part of the ear HURTS like a sonofabitch afterwards (the sleeping part is pretty bad, too... not only can you not sleep on that side of your body for AGES, but it tends to throb even when you're not touching it and it keeps you up- Ibuprofin works well in stopping that- or take a NyQuil. :) ) And it'll hurt for a long while, too. Like, two months. Not as bad as it hurts now, mind you, but it'll hurt. Pain is part of the deal.
Umm... yeah. Advil or Excedrin works well to stop the throbbing and the heat (your ear feels REALLY hot, doesn't it? lol), but I wouldn't change it for a few weeks if it's ALL cartilage. Like, two, minimum. And DO NOT put a ring in it for at least two months. I've heard horror stories. And if it gets TOO swollen (like, you can't turn the stud or it just looks WAY too swollen and red), try to take it out immediatly, and if you can't, go to the doctor. My friend Michelle had to get one taken out by the doc... the rim of her ear was almost half an inch thicker than it should have been and her whole ear was bright red, almost maroon... it was bad.
Anyways, just take painkillers an wait a while to change it, and you should be ok. :)

J.
