Subject: more on daniels knees

I took this from silverchair.nu

The lead singer of silverchair, Daniel Johns, has been struck down by reactive arthritis, a condition which has left the 22-year-old bedridden in his Newcastle home.
The unusual form of arthritis, where joints swell up painfully, only occurs when a person is struck down by flu or a virus.

Johns has been suffering from reactive arthritis for at least two months but his illness only came to light when he was unable to leave his home.

He was forced to shuffle across the stage during his performance at the Big Day Out in late January, but is now relying on a walking stick to move around.

Professor Allan Sturgess, an arthritis expert from the University of NSW, said: "It is often too painful to walk with this condition and it mainly affects the knees and ankles.

"Usually the person has been really healthy, but they find themselves completely debilitated by the illness.

"It is a chronic condition for a very small number of people, but in 19 out of 20 cases it only happens once."

The crippling condition has come as a huge blow to the talented singer-songwriter, who is on the verge of launching a new album, Diorama, with fellow band members Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou.

"It is very frustrating for Daniel," silverchair manager John Watson said.

"He has spent the better part of three years making this record, and now that it's about to come out, it's frustrating he's not able to be 100per cent on deck."

But Mr Watson said Johns was resting in preparation for an exclusive hour-long performance in the Triple J studios on April 1, when the band will perform their songs in front of an audience.

"That's going to be a big day for him, and he'll definitely be there," Mr Watson said.

The band is expected to be seated during the performance because it is inside the ABC studios.

But health experts have predicted Johns will have limited ability to perform on stage for at least a couple of months because of the painful nature of his illness.

London-based pop singer Natalie Imbruglia, who is in aserious relationship with Johns, is believed to be considering a return trip to Australia to visit her sick boyfriend.

But Imbruglia is committed to a three-month promotional tour in the US.

A BMG spokesman said she would remain there for the time being.
