Well well well, last night was truly a night to remember, and i can honestly say one of the best of my life. The atmosphere was truly electric, and after the madness of Gonzalez (the mans a complete loon), the fun really started. The gig kicked off with shot shot, Rex Kramer, and "warm Trombone", and the guys just seemed to be having so much fun up there. I got the feeling that the fun that was had didnt really come across on the radio because all the hilarious shenanigans between songs were cut, and believe me there were lots. The band absolutely rocked out during warm trombone, and you really got the feeling they were having the time of their lives. It seemed evident that they thrived off this type of small gig (only about 50 people) and appreciated what the fans were doing for them. They put their heart and soul into every track, so much so that Tom was knackered after the first two and complained "who the hell has an asthmatic in a rock band!" The band laughed thier way through the entire set, especially when Tom discovered a brand new button on his keyboard, and they spent the next minute or two cracking up at the bizarre sounds he had discovered.
As for the live tracks themselves, they were superb, the band being on top form. They seem to have a wild time playing detroit swing 66 (how the hell did that change so much over two years)and enjoyed it more than any other song, proving it would be a crime if its not a single!! Ruff Stuff was indeed "as Daft as a brush" as Tom exclaimed, and sound of sounds was true heart wrenching stuff, which just oozes feeling when performed live. Miles end was another gooden, and if you weren't aware, was the original end to get miles, hence the main riff being the one from Gomez in a Bucket which also appears in Get Miles live.A highlight for me was In Our Gun, which was played masterfully and with a true air of grace, you couldnt help but groove along to the incredible break down at the end which rocked the foundations. This performance proved to me at least that this track was always destined to be the stand out song on the album! I was also impressed with Do's and Don'ts, which isn't my favourite Gomez song but worked brilliantly live.
As for the rest of the memorable moments, they mostly consisted of the guys having a laugh. The line of the night came from Tom after Ian stated "look out for Blackie, cos though he's hiding behind the drums, he IS playing a squeeze box" Tom: "and for those listening on the radio, he is also riding a Cammel!!!" Oh how we chortled! And who could forget the comedy moment when Tom shared with us that his mate thought Ballad of nice and easy would work well on a Tampon commercial", this resulted in ridiculous banter between them until Ian finally exclaimed that "its official, this song is about periods" (i see it in a whole new light now). The lot of 'em were in hysterics for the rest of the show!!
Ending on picadilly, the show was a blinder as always, and destroyed the other two times ive seen them (Reading 2000 and Brixton 2000), but the important thing is i only got to bloody talk to them after, which is trully a lifes ambition fullfiled. And vitally i got to ask the two questions from Tijuanadude and Sean:
Q1, Is it true that we might see two albums this year...Ans, News to us, but we do hope to get more albums out relatively soon if the record label lets us, not quite that soon though! (joint answer from Tom and manager Steve)
Q2, Any chance of seeing the demo songs released...Ans,no plans as yet but, songs from that era do occasionally still crop up now so you could see some stuff, no stand alone release though (i did get the impression though that if they knew how many fans wanted it they might make an attenpt to get something out!!!)
Q3,My question to Dajon...Stir fried Hedgehog or Oven ready Badger?!?!?...Ans, Well its got to be oven ready badger hasn't it!!(odd seeing as he is a vegetarian, but hey, i would have gone for the badger)
And so thats my pretty damn comprehensive review. And so with signed albums and used drumsticks aplenty (even a cool picture of steve the manager looking like elvis for my friend Chloe, my guest, from Tom (what a talented chap he is)), i return to the land of normal once again, intent on entering every competition i can, now i know that people really do win them!!! I suggest you all do the same.
