i happen to love the offspring. i think they're one one the most molodic bands around. i take pride in my musical taste and i have quite a diverse taste too: ben folds five, sigur ros, gomez, radiohead, tom waits, as well as most of the southern californian punk scene etc but i cannot stand it when people dismiss whole music genres because they either:
A)don't give the music a chance,
B)don't understand that music can be mean more to people than simply what you're listening to. it can be a way of life or a culture. eg. hip hop and punk.
or
C)refuse to acknowlegde the fact that a lot of punk bands are more melodic and write better simple songs than a lot of your so called "musically talented" bands. they're often bad at their instruments but it's the song that's important at the end of the day and bands like blink 182 and greenday are so successful because they're good at writing simple songs with an abundance of melody. that's why the beatles were so good. they were the same. wonderfully simple melody.
also, you dismiss metal as music that "sounds like crap all the time". you're wrong and if metal hadn't existed we may not have had the pleasure of hearing the one band we all love - GOMEZ. ian ball and olly peacock are both self confessed metalheads and it no doubt shaped their musical knowlegde and songwriting. the gomez we know and love today may well have been a vastly different band had metal not existed.
i think every musical genre is relevant and interesting in it's own way and just because you do not understand or even like it, is no reason to dismiss it as being unworthy of listening to. what say you all on this topic?
