Never heard of a doctor giving an enema in a patient's home, but as a child remember the doctor telling my mom to give me one just before he left. Maybe way back when old time doctors did this. I grew up in late 50's early 60's, just before doctors stopped making house calls, they came to the house did what they had to do and left. I didn't like when the doc came by because I would always end up getting an enema.

In my case when my mother would call the doctor's office his nurse would often tell her to give me an enema before the doctor got to our house. This was more the rule than the exception and it would be no surprise that after mom hung up the phone from make the appointment than out would come the enema bag. When the doctor got to the house one of his questions as he was examining me was whether I had gotten the recommended enema, how much was I given, did it work, etc.

My experience was exactly the same. If our doctor was making a house call, you were a good enema before his arrival. When he appeared, the enema was discussed in detail, much to my embarrassment. When my father got home, the same discussion reoccurred.

" ... When my father got home, the same discussion reoccurred. ..."

Yes, that always happened although I sometimes felt my father was too tired to care about the nitty-gritty details. But mom recited some of the most intimate details not just to dad, but my aunt and any of her coffee clique friends who stopped by for some coffee and cake.
And if there was a question of body temperature it would be taken again in the kitchen. That's when it got embarrassing because sometimes, not always, mom would decide I, or my brother or sister, had to lower our PJs and bend over the countertop so she could insert a rectal in front of who ever was visiting.
