Subject: Getting shots during house calls Author: Steven [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] Date Posted: Monday, August 30, 2010, 11:43: am Our family doctor would occasionally make house calls when one of the kids got sick back in the '70s. It seemed that this always entailed someone getting stuck with a needle, so the announcement that the doc would be coming was not always a popular one. I twice remember getting penicillin shots on my bed due to a sore throat when I was pretty young. Worse than that was a case when my sister was sick, but my brother and I (who were NOT sick) had to get gamma globulin shots as teens. Something about having that done in our own room made us more upset about it. It made for sore tempers as well as sore rear ends. Did anyone else have experiences like this? I remember one time in which all of us were present while our younger sister was treated. My mother was usually present when I was the patient, and I recall my older brother being an observer once. However, this time mentioned above we were older, and thus did not have parents or younger siblings present. We (my brother and I) received our shots together in our shared bedroom. She really protested at first. I said if you want to wait until you are as ill as she is that is fine. She came over to my apartment about an hour later and said okay. I told her I would be over in a few minutes. I knocked on the door and she told me to come in. She was in her nightie which barely covered anything. I watched her little butt wiggled as she walked into her room. She laid across the bed. As I exposed her butt she said please be easy. I had to pinch her butt cheek so the needle would not hit her bone. She started to cry as I finished the first injection. I gave her a few minutes to compose herself before giving her the second shot. The next day the girls made me dinner. I could not take my eyes off their butts. She had on a thong so I gently her hip with the alcohol and then quickly placed the 18g needle into her cheek. She jumped and I told her to relax and then slowly pushed down on the plunger. I told her one more as I jabbed her other butt cheek. Her roomate watched. Jenny came over this morning and told me her throat was sore. This evening I will be giving her the same 2 shots. The doctor not to rediaper him yet, he wanted to check him over, he took his temperature 1st, rectally, while this was regitering he asked about history and if he was allergic to anything, dad told him no, but he wasn't able to take oral meds, because of a reflux problem, no probs doctor said, as he read his temperature, I going to give him antibiotic in his bottom, btw me and my other brother were watching all the proceedings, and we new how he would be feeling soon because go threw the same procedure on a regular basis for the same reasons, the doctor gave him the shot and said that dad would need to bring him in to the surgery in a couple of days for another shot, after this injection the doctor said ok to put his diaper on, and left, see you in a couple of days. Those shots seemed to hurt more and take longer than the ones I got bending over the receptionist's lap in his surgery, possibly because the relative lack of embarrassment (the girl watching me get them) left me more conscious of what was happening. On the other hand, my bottom seemed less tender afterwards because, being in bed, I was less aware of my inability to sit down. The usual procedure was when the doctor was ready Id feel him wipe my butt with alcohol and then my entire family would slowly count to three. This was torture. At three the needle was jabbed deep inside me and not only did the needle hurt but the medicine was even worse. When it was over I talked to no one and stayed in my room for the rest of the night. Usually we'd be in bed or on the couch in the living room, told to turn over, and then our pajama bottoms and briefs or panties depending on who was being seen were pulled down. Now at that point either things went quickly or dragged a few minutes. Fast was the immediate filling of the required number of syringes. Occasionally, we got both antibiotics and vitamin injections. The swab with alcohol, the jab, plunged medicine, a re-wipe if we bled, then band aids. The slow ones were when based on a discussion with my mom, the doctor felt a temperature taking was called for. Again, bared bottom though we'd get the thermometer put up our rectum and while we were laying there waiting for him to remove the thermometer, we usually got the injections while the thermometer was still registering; 3 minutes. Glass mercury thermometer. My mom always did our temps by mouth, he always did it in our rectums, and suggested my Mom start again to do it that way too. She did! And my sister though somewhat more tolerant of injections, freaked on learning mom was changing the temperature route to the rectal method. I found that a bit strange too, because I know the house calls made for her by the MD, also found her rolled over with a thermometer sticking out of her behind. But I guess getting it from mom had more of a psychological effect. Many a boisterous tirade ensued in the following months and two years before we turned 18, especially when my sister was sick, and mom told her she was getting her temperature taken. We reminisce about this every so often, and laugh. Though more technologically advanced where for the most part RTs are not needed, the 18 or 21g needle occasionally finds our posteriors and we get shots, though no longer from the MD on a house call.
