When I was a kid and a call was made to the Dr's office I could be certain that an enema would be prescribed and guess what? I was right. I can still hear moms words as she told the doctors nurse that she would give Marc (me) an enema right away. Within minutes of the call I was in position with that warm soapy water flooding my bowels and mom reciting the doctors orders to give me repeated enemas until only clear water came out. By the end of the session I was exhausted and totally emptied out. Mom would hang the enema bag and hose on the towel rack to dry for the world to see. It would be there a minimum of 3 days so even if my friends were over they would see the enema bag and ask me about it. Since I was an only child they k new I was on the receiving end of the hose.

My doctor never gave me an enema; however he advised my Mum to do so. The major event I remember him doing was my first DRE. I was only 4 and a half, and I still remember being held firmly by my Mum while the doctor palpated my tummy, and then told her to hold my knees back to my chest (I was laying on my back on her lap), and he, probably gently, but it sure doesn't remember that way, inched his finger into my little behind. I screamed blue murder, and struggled with all my might to break loose, but Mum held firm, and the monster kept inching in. I cannot remember after the insertion, that is, if he 'rummaged around' a bit, maybe I block it out... eventually, though, the digit retreated out of me. Subsequent to that, and after we got home, enemas commenced, all being administered by Mum. I guess he concluded that there was nothing physically wrong with me that was preventing my toilet training being completed. I do consider my self lucky that I got very few shots, none that I remember in the butt.

A very vivid description - but weren't the enemas more horrifying, especially when you knew what was coming.

reply to Sue... actually, compared to that first DRE, the enemas weren't that bad, once I found out that that they weren't as bad. The little nozzle on the syringe was smaller than the doctor's finger. The thing that upset me was the lack of control. I had no choice when I was going to get it; very frustrating, and it made me very angry.. Mum said it was going to happen, and that was it! Too much fussing meant a paddling. And then I would get enema anyway..

I grew up during the 1930's, 40's and 50's. Seems like that I was always sick with colds or flu or something or other. The doctor was called and usually prescribed a sulfa tablet. Sulfa was just coming on the scene about that time. But enemas from the doctor at home does not seem to spark a memory. Enemas yes, and plenty of them too. Hardly a eek passed by but what I received an enema or two or three. And it always seemed that my mother took an enema right after she gave one to me
