Waking up feeling ill during my youth had the initially welcome decision that I could stay home from school but I spent most of the day in dread of the doctor's house call. It was the era of penicillin shots and my greatest fear was what my friends all deemed the childish humiliation of getting injections in the bottom.

When the doctor finally arrived, I apprehensively watched everything he took from his medical bag, hoping it wouldn't be a syringe, but I never saw him produce one because I always had to roll over and look away before he prepared the shot.

On returning to school a day or so later, I was often asked whether I had a shot and, most embarrassingly, where. I did my best to disguise an injection-sore buttock but enjoyed visualising any girl absent for illness getting a shot in her shapely bare bottom.
