Thing I most feared hearing on house calls was, "Roll over for a shot"!

First there were feared questions
"how are her bowels? has she had a bowel movement today?"
Then, the dreaded instruction
"turn her onto her side, I'm going to check her bottom"
although I'm pretty sure that when my daughter had her fainting incident outside the bathroom the house-call doctor turned her over and did the anal exam with no verbal build-up (and yes, the enema equipment came out of the box soon after - the fainting was apparently something to do with straining on the toilet causing a trapped nerve)

Fainting while trying to move your bowels, or shortly thereafter, is a common problem caused by "too much straining." This causes what we call a "vasovagal" reaction where the vagus nerve is stimulated and the heart slows down, the BP drops, and the patient faints on the seat or soon after they stand up (called postural hypotension)

The way to avoid this reaction (which could lead to falling and hitting your head or other injury) is not to strain when trying to move your bowels. If it doesn't come easily, stop, and come back later when you get the urge, use a suppository or small enema, or take a laxative and wait for it to work.

Just let nature take its course. No-one ever got sick from delaying a BM for a few hours or a day or so, but straining can get you in trouble as described above.

Assume the position! This is spoken by a deep male voice and was followed closely by the sound of rubber examination gloves snapping on the doctors large hairy wrist. your getting a prostate exam!
