Did anyone else dread the sound, heard through a closed bathroom door, of the water tap running for a short period? Because it was inextricably associated with lubricating a glycerin suppository - and you were expecting to then hear the protests and screams of your sibling as the bullet was forced in?

My greatest fear was what the doctor was going to recommend for my older half sister Marcie to do for me when I got back home. She is 18 years my senior. She was a pediatric nurse straight out of college when I was only 4 years old. On many occasions, Marcie would look after me by day while mom worked, because she worked night hours at the hospital. I had gotten use to mom using the underarm method to take my temperature. I guess it kind of spoiled me. But with Marcie being a pediatric nurse, she always insisted taking my temperature rectally because I was under 6 years old. Every time Marcie took me to the doctor when I had a bad cold, I would dread the instant we walked through the door. The nurse at the children's clinic always stuck the thermometer up my butt, and I hated that. If I was running a fever at the moment, she would usually do it again right before we left the exam room, then the doctor would tell Marcie to keep a close watch on my temperature when we got home. Sure enough, just as soon as we got home, the first thing she did was take my underwear off and go to the bathroom to get the rectal thermometer and Vaseline. She took my temperature the same way the clinic nurse did, legs up like for a diaper change, then the greasy thermometer was plunged half way up my rectum. It was really uncomfortable and I cried more times than not having it done. I guess she did it for good reason, and she took great care of me. It's just the butt thermometer was always a subject of dread for me before I turned 6.
