I know for many years that there have been insurance companies that will send a nurse practitioner to your home to do a so-called insurance exam. I've never had a physical in my own home. Always a doctors office. Have any of you received at home physicals? If so, what did they entail? Was there any nudity required at any time?

I've never had a physical for insurance before and I'm curios myself to know what is involved. I've had physicals for sports, for general health, preemployment and for a commercial drivers license and they have all been a little different except for one thing. That one thing is you end up nude. I don't know if your insurance is for health or for life insurance, but you probably wouldn't need to get undressed for life insurance. I've never heard of anyone dying from a hernia, but you never know. I hope someone answers your question, because I'm curious too.

Here is the reason i started this thread. When i lived in California i had a friend that told me that he had an in home physical. He was married, had started his own business, and had applied for a large life insurance policy. The life insurance company sent a female nurse practitioner to his house. She called him a few days before the exam and requested that he not eat or drink anything except water because she would be drawing blood and needed a urine sample. She did the exam in his living room. Even did an EKG via phone line hookup. She then had him remove his underwear and did a genital exam and then prostate exam. It was on the up and up. Both of those items were on the exam form. He was naked for a couple of minutes. He said she was very friendly, very business like, and quite pretty!

to Bob W.
No doubt his physical included a nude session. My CDL (commercial drivers license) physical exam was done with me wearing only a gown. I have the form used by the P.A. who did the exam, and I will show what they are expected to check for in the exam.
14 HEART. stethoscope exam required. etc.
15 BLOOD PRESSURE. Systolic --- Diastolic---.
16 Pulse. Before exercise. -- After two minute exercise --.
17 ABDOMEN. Note any defects or injuries. etc.
HERNIA. yes___ no___
17 GASTROINTESTINAL. Ulcer or other disease.
17 GENITOURINARY. Note injuries, scars, abnormalities or urethal discharge.

It went on to list five more areas to be checked including spine, extremities, knee jerk reflex and hemorrhoid tissue or injury,

The P.A. pulled the gown up to my chest to do the exam of my abdomen. I was wearing nothing but the gown and was nude from the chest down. I should also mention that I was on my back on an exam table when she did the abdominal exam. I then had to stand by the table while she did a hernia check. Back on the table where she again raised my gown to my chest and did what was called for on the genitourinary exam which was a thorough exam of my penis and testicles which included much pulling and stretching and foreskin retractions and a scrotum exam for cancer. She also milked my penis to check for urethal discharge. I might add that she did the milking first before the other parts of the exam. That was wise on her part because I had an embarrassing erection before she fished. She stopped for just a moment when I got an erection, and looked at the nurse who was observing it all, shrugged and went on with the exam. I also was on my hands and knees while she spread my cheeks and looked at my anus. She ran a gloved finger around my anus but didn't insert it.
That was a physical for a commercial drivers license and seemed extreme but I have the form right here in front of me.
I might add that this was in a clinic that had just opened. I got right in when I called. There was no one in the waiting room and the only people who seemed to be there was the receptionist/nurse and the P.A. who did the actual exam. Two years later when I called for an appointment I( was told I would have to wait at least three weeks to be seen. So, I'm not surprised your friend was nude for a couple of minutes. You cant get a physical anymore with out taking off everything.

I have had three of four of these visits, and they amount to little more than a nurse in a doctor's office does before you see the doctor. All of mine have been done by an ARNP. The usual stuff:

1. Review allergies and medications.

2. Vital signs, weight, and may include listening to heart and lungs.

3. May include blood-sugar and/or A1C test.

4. May also include urine test.

5. Mental-acuity test.

6. Discussion of any medical concerns, and recommendations, based on your age, of any other tests and vaccinations.

7. Check for edema or swelling.

It is NOT a "physical-exam", per se, so undressing is not necessary. It is simply an opportunity to converse with a medical-care-provider in an unhurried-environment.

Getting a REAL "physical-exam" is nearly-impossible these day, particularly for a man. The only reason I get a "male-exam" every year is because I have a urologist. Most doctors forget that there is a LOT of things that SHOULD be checked, but are usually forgotten. If you are breathing and have a pulse, you must be "okay".

Amen to what you said about getting a full physical if you are a man. I would like to add that the older you get, and the uglier your body gets, the briefer your exam will be. At a time when I need more medical thoroughness in my exam I seem to be getting less, particularly from female doctors. I don't think they enjoy looking at old farts. I guess I don't blame them, but I still resent the lack of caring.
