The rectal temperature was for a long time considered as more accurate and practical than the oral one, so at school, the permanent nurse did it each time she needed to check the temperature of a male student in my only boys school,even at high school grades.
it was generally the same at hospitals and in some doctor's offices depending on the reason of the visit, if the doctor presumed that a boy had a high temperature, he wanted that it was a rectal temperature to have a more precise result.
Everybody believed that it was more precise, even our mothers who stopped to do it about 12 or 13 age, but told us to do it after that age when we were obviously sick.
Even at the army for draftees during military service, if they went to the office of the male military doctor at the barracks after induction, it was a captain, he began always his exam by taking a rectal temperature, it was easy since the non commissioner officer who supervised you at the visit sent you in a small cabin to undress completely whatever was the reason of your coming and therefore you came in front of the doctor stark naked and each time he told you "turn around and bend over in front of the table" and you felt his cool fingers spreading widely your butt before inserting the thermometer. It happened to me a few times.
At home my privacy was respected after 12 or 13 age as long as I was not seriously sick.
Because in that case, my modesty was considered as irrelevant, my mother did not mind if i was now shy towards nudity and did not like to expose my buttocks, she told that she wanted to be sure that my temperature was the good one and like one had said it was not unpleasant to feel her warm hands on one of the cheek of my buttocks while she waited after having inserted the thermometer in my rectum, it was the same for suppositories, I was told to insert them myself but only if I was not too sick, in that case she did it.
At hospitals, I presume that I would have been treated with the same lack of respect of my modesty than it was said in a few messages, the modesty of boys was not important until at least 15 or 16 age. So I am not surprised that you were exposed naked buttocks to the view of young nurses or persons walking in the corridor, and I had heard that the rules about shaving were very strict at that time and it was standard procedure to check that the shaving was well done a short time before a surgery operation.
As regards shots in the buttocks, they were very commonly practiced on boys on the reverse of today, I don't know why,
and I remember well of a trick used frequently by nurses which was to give a slap on the left cheek of the buttocks when the nurse wanted to shot the right cheek and the reverse of course, it was according to what they said to distract the boys before the shot so that they did not expect with anxiety the shotbecause they thought to the slap, and they were surprised by the shot on the other cheek. According to them, they were learned to perform shots on the butts like that with that trick at school nurse because when there was no time to think about a shot just before it was done, it was better, it was less harmful!
