It allows deeper penetration and firmer contact with the lining of the rectal interior more so than a standard four inch glass rectal thermometer in that age group. By removing the glass ring off the non-entry end and shaping and polishing it off to a slightly dull point, it looks to be a larger and thicker, four inch glass rectal thermometer.
