Subject: Nose Drops

This site revolves around the sick room experiences we had as children. I had similar experiences that I read about here like having my temperature taken rectally, receiving medications like aspirin in suppository form because I had trouble swallowing pills. Enemas were done when constipated or ill. The doctor made house calls and usually gave me a penicillin shot in my rear end to cure pneumonia or other bacterial infection. Cough syrup with codeine was a treat for that hacking cough. One interesting part of the experience were the pajamas I wore -- they had a drop seat to make taking my rectal temperature or giving me a suppository or an enema very easy for my mother to do.

What no one else ever brought up before is the other medication for the child with a cold, one that was accompanied by a stuffy nose. I got a cold a few times every winter and sometimes in the warm seasons. My mother routinely gave me nose drops for that, roughly every four hours for the few days I had that condition.

The experience itself was almost as arousing as having my temperature taken rectally, it often gave me an erection just thinking about it and still does. I had to lay on my mother's bed with my head hanging over the edge so that my nostrils were pointed up and the drops would slide down where the stuffiness was. I watched her fill the dropper and put half of the medicine in each nostril, about six drops. It worked great. I could breathe freely. If my sister had a cold when I did, both of us would lie next to each other with our heads over the edge of the bed and be given nose drops in an assembly line like fashion. My parents took nose drops in the same position, giving them to themselves or each other the same way we got them. I got to know the brands well -- Tyzine, Privine, Neo-Synepherine. My favorite was St. Joseph Nose Drops for Children. The bottle of nose drops were always on the dresser or night stand along with the Vaseline and the rectal thermometer to remind me of what to expect during my illness.

Does anyone else remember being given nose drops as a child and having it become one of those experiences where your mother took great care of you when you were sick?
