Sounds similar to my own experiences growing up in England many years ago. High potty chair, red rubber Higginson pump up my bum if I couldnt "go". I must have been somewhere between 3 and 4 yo.
Mummy would squeeze it a few times and then ask "can you go now?" Though it should have been obvious the way I was squirming and groaning!
Once I got older and more used to it I would take it laying down over her lap and then in my early teens kneeling down on the bathroom floor, legs wide apart, head down, bottom up.
Needless to say I was able to take a much greater volume and my enema went in a lot deeper giving me a much better clean out, which ofcourse I very much needed.

My first ever enema was when I was 12 after we had just moved in with step mom. There were now several kids in the family so some of us got our enema from a bag in our bedroom and then put on a hospital type toilet chair so as to not tie up the bathroom. I was horrified, traumatized, cried and then got my enema. I can relive it in my head so clearly. I can close my eyes and see myself sitting on the toilet chair with my enema in me and my sister letting step mom's girls look in or even come in our shared bedroom to watch me try to get my enema back out. The enemas continued regularly until you moved out of her house.

By the age of 12 an enema wasnt a big deal for me.In fact I looked forward to the clean out!
I suppose I was lucky Mummy got me used to it at an early age
As I got older I found the gentle pumping action of the Higgy
rather soothing and easy to take.
Sorry to hear about your bad experience.
