I have had three of four of these visits, and they amount to little more than a nurse in a doctor's office does before you see the doctor. All of mine have been done by an ARNP. The usual stuff:

1. Review allergies and medications.

2. Vital signs, weight, and may include listening to heart and lungs.

3. May include blood-sugar and/or A1C test.

4. May also include urine test.

5. Mental-acuity test.

6. Discussion of any medical concerns, and recommendations, based on your age, of any other tests and vaccinations.

7. Check for edema or swelling.

It is NOT a "physical-exam", per se, so undressing is not necessary. It is simply an opportunity to converse with a medical-care-provider in an unhurried-environment.

Getting a REAL "physical-exam" is nearly-impossible these day, particularly for a man. The only reason I get a "male-exam" every year is because I have a urologist. Most doctors forget that there is a LOT of things that SHOULD be checked, but are usually forgotten. If you are breathing and have a pulse, you must be "okay".

Amen to what you said about getting a full physical if you are a man. I would like to add that the older you get, and the uglier your body gets, the briefer your exam will be. At a time when I need more medical thoroughness in my exam I seem to be getting less, particularly from female doctors. I don't think they enjoy looking at old farts. I guess I don't blame them, but I still resent the lack of caring.
