Giving an enema is not that difficult and I can not imagine any mom being so dense that she needed the doctor to show her how to give one. I guess I have to wonder why she would even have an enema bag or bulb in the house if she did notYea know how to use it.

Years ago girls were given home nursing classes in high schools and the topic of enemas was included.

You wrote that years ago, girls were given home nursing classes in high school, and learned how to give enemas. What year was this...in the 40,50 or sixties?

I didn't need any course at school. When we were sick, my mom sometimes gave us an enema with a bulb thingy that had a black nozzle about three or four inches long. From very early on I remember helping her when she gave my brothers an enema and then when I got a bit older she had me do it carefully.
She would fix a bowl up with warm, not hot, soapy water and bring it, a towel and the bulb to the bedroom. My brothers would have their Pj bottoms and underwear if they had some on, removed and if possible kneel on the towel that was draped over a part of the bed. Then they had to lean over so their heads were on the mattress and their behinds were exposed for the bulb, spreading their knees and cheeks. Sometimes she would take the temperature.
After helping her several times she began to let me apply the lubericating ointment to the boys and even insert the bulb. I was always very careful and gentle with them as I knew how it felt to have the bulb slipped in me.
Mom was very patient and explained what she was doing and how to do it as well as the need to be careful with the boys parts that hung down.
Once there were a couple of bulbs of water in the behind she would let us get up and run to the toilet down the hall. Usually the process was repeated two or three times til the water that came out was clear.
When I was sick it was the same except I do not think she let Mikey do it to me although the boys were usually standing at the doorway where they could see everything anyway.
So I had no need for the Red Cross to teach me about giving enemas. Fortunately we did not get sick that often other than the usual cold or flu each winter.

I took such a course using a Red Cross text in the mid 60s and suspect that it had been taught in the 40s and 50s as well. My mother recalled such a high school course in the late 30s.
