Subject: A Question on Blood Atonement

I guess this question is for the LDS that visit this board. In my studies I have come across several references to "Blood Atonement" or something similar. The latest was in reading "Leaving the Saints" by Martha Beck, daughter of Hugh Nibley. I only picked up this book because I am a huge fan of Hugh Nibley. I really love his insight and humor. However, I have only heard of this "Blood Atonement" sacrifice bit in anti-Mormon literature and was wondering what was the source of this claim? I mean no disrespect to any LDS in asking this. I have access to much Mormon material, some sanctioned by the Presidency of the LDS Church but have yet to discover what grain of truth, if any, the anti-Mormons have clung to, to make this believable to any...

I am aware of Jeff Lundgren, AKA "The Prophet of Death" and his association with the RLDS Church...might this be what people are using to fortify this belief? Was there ever such a thing as a blood sacrifice re-enactment in the LDS Temples?

Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

Ciao,

Banshee

As far as I can discern, “blood atonement” refers to some belief that certain sins can only be atoned for by having one's life taken; and furthermore, that in the early days, the church enforced this doctrine by putting to death those who committed such sins.  It seems that there are often attempts to tie this in with the Mountain Meadows Massacre and with the activities of the Danites.

In contrast to whatever claims may be made about “blood atonement”, the authoritative statement of official doctrine and policy that is relevant to such a matter — in effect since well before any of this is alleged to have taken place, in effect to this day, and in effect forever (or at least until God tells us differently) — is found in the Doctrine and Covenants 134:10

»   We believe that all religious societies have a right to deal
»   with their members for disorderly conduct, according to
»   the rules and regulations of such societies; provided that
»   such dealings be for fellowship and good standing; but we
»   do not believe that any religious society has authority to
»   try men on the right of property or life, to take from them
»   this world’s goods, or to put them in jeopardy of either life
»   or limb, or to inflict any physical punishment upon them.
»   They can only excommunicate them from their society, and
»   withdraw from them their fellowship.
