I'm looking into the jvc d-vhs vcr. I would like to convert old vhs tapes to a higher resolution so they look crisper digitaly.
They will not look better. But at 14,1Mb/s, DVHS makes an exact copy and you will not be able to make the difference between the original and its copy.

I have been able to do this with a dvd recorder, but only get 1hour. I see that the digital vcr gets up to 24hours per tape. which is long enough for a full movie.
24 hours is achieved using the slow speed - the data-rate drops accordingly and you will then see MPEG artifacts and/or drops (if you play deck isn't state of the art or if your tapes weren't that well recorded).
Stick to the standard speed if you want no loss at all.

I have s-vhs and hate it. That is why I went with dvd.
A good S deck well setup with pro tapes (Fuji, Maxell BQ) can be amazing. But the current crap sold as SVHS or SVHS ET is quite inferior to the decks built a few years ago, before DV came in and changed everything...

But cant fit full movie on dvd at best quality. The disk are great though if it is only for 1hour.
And the data-rate is ridiculously low for the job anyway.

I dont have hdtv so I just want to record alalog tapes and play back on regular size tv set.
Then go with DVHS indeed, you'll be amazed at the quality.
cheers
