The fragility of DVHS tapes is another question,in the industry the backup of files is largely made on DAT,that are similar to DVHS tapes, only smaller, and think that Sony is going to present a new type of dat that can contain 500gb on a single cassette!!!

Just a note: I've been using DAT since about 1990 and currently have 3 decks: Sony's DTC1000 and 2000 as well as a Pana 3800. The DVHS decks I have seen are from being able to stand up to any of these dat decks. "Smaller/bigger" is the problem: one needs mucho drive to pull those 1/2" 420' tapes...

What I mean to say is this: DVHS decks are not well made and I wouldn't bet on long term stability, let alone servicing. Furthermore, just as audio DAT was abandoned by all involved last year, the DVHS standard itself seems pretty fragile if not undergoing discrete burial... And by far it never had any sort of pro support&involvement like DAT had.

Would you archive anything on a format that, alas, is (or seems) pretty much close to disappearing?
that's only what I meant.
