Chris,

US camera will record in NTSC which (although digital) is incompatible with PAL unless you go through a decoder.

Get a cheap Sony Digital 8 camera from Currys in the UK, SONY
TRV130
DIGITAL CAMCORDER £599 with a few months interest free. And if it can't record DV in, get a DV enabler from Keene Electronics (www.keene.co.uk) so that you can.

All in all, much cheaper than a flight to the states and a standards converter (NTSC-PAL)!
