Hi,

>Why did you say the Thomson "seems to have some
>cruelsome problems"?

Not experienced by my own, but read in two German av magazines (the best ones I suppose: "Video" and "Audiovision"):

- a katastrophical search mode (only every 20-25 s a picture in forward search, *no* at all picture in backward "search")
- short sound drop-outs, especially in LS3
- in LS3 even short picture drop-outs
- not that good analog picture as it should be (especially in comparison to the outstanding analog picture of the JVC)
- no real S-VHS (can't record, has difficulties with playback of some recordings)
- very noisy (not due to the fan, but the drive itself)

On the other hand:

+ best digital picture
+ RGB in & out
+ digital out (optical & coaxial) (BTW: for what? *If* there were 5.1 D-VHS tapes, the Thomson could use it?)
+ not only plays NTSC (as NTSC or PAL 60), but even records NTSC (at least analog - whats with digital?)
+ infrared emitter for satellite receiver
+ manual setting/erasing of index marks

So: If you always want the best digital quality (no LS3, but SD and none/few [S-]VHS tapes) and can live with the noise and the crappy "search mode", it is the recorder of choice.

And: It seems to cost only 800 Euro in Germany since a few days (at least, some different people told me that - never saw that on my own). At that price: All critics forgive & forget. ;-)
