Subject: PDR to DVHS

I just purchased a JVC HDM-3000 digital VCR. It has 4 pin Firewire in. My Sony Direct TV receiver/hard disk recorder has two USB ports which are not mentioned in the manual. I would like to input the recorded programs in digital videio format into my laptop's USB port and then output from the Firewire connector of my laptop to the Firewire connector of the JVC. I would also like to play DVD's on my laptop and record them on the JVC through Firewire. Does anyone know the specifics on this?

Right now, I am archiving the Direct TV programs from my Sony receiver on to my JVC through S-Video in and out. The JVC encodes these and stores them on DVHS and the results are quite good, but the quality should be better if the connection was digital-to-digital, without decoding and encoding.
