Yes you can.
But be aware that it seems to be a sort of unofficial tolerance and that all machines will not react in the same manner. It all depends on your machine & on the tape used.

My Philips VR20D seems to accept that but will afterwards (and rather too often for my taste) not read the D signal recorded on an S tape, start the DSPC thingy flash a couple of errors and a black screen. But then, it doesn't do that all the time...

From all I could read on D-VHS machines, it seems that each is libel to have it's own very personal quirks. I don't risk it anymore and only use D tapes now. I'm afraid you'll have to buy first... and see what happens.

From all the test I have been able to conduct about using S tapes, you need to use really really good tapes (ie. nothing below the prof type as the Maxell BQ series or Fuji H471S). The problem is: these tapes are real hard to find in Europe and quite expensive. So why bother - play it safe and use D tapes...

D-VHS is a truly astounding format (and I'm used to digiBeta) - go get one, you won't be sorry.

(little tip: always make a full wind/rewind cycle before using a new tape ; when recorded, store vertically and wound at the end of the tape)
