blue laser technology is 2 yrs off the street.
.. probably a bit more than that.

I have now discovered that D Theater (D vhs) exists now and that a number of players are around.
D-Theater, to my knowledge, is available perhaps in Japan and was announced in the US - forget about Europe.

D-VHS, on the other hand, is still here. Amazing picture quality, NO loss. Since the format was introduced late and not that well marketed, you can find players/recorders here and there at a fraction of their initial cost. Tapes a bit expensive but worth every penny.

I would be very grateful for all constructive advice and references.
Standard decks (not HD) are Philips the VR-D20 and JVC HM-DR10000 - different design but the same really. The Philips is a rebadge only as the very same Philips design is sold in Japan as a W-VHS deck by JVC...
When launched, there were more of the Philips in France and more of the JVC elsewhere. There was a third, Thomson, but very scarcely distributed.
These three are D decks, NOT HD decks. HD decks are only marketed in Japan in the US. Check the JVC USA site for more precise info.

Players are around indeed but, as far as I know, PRE-recorded HD tapes aren't yet. And as far as HD broadcast over Europe is concerned, it's conservative to say that we're way behind what's already been accomplished both on the US and JP markets.

Japan might have the first flavor of HD-VHS pre-recorded tapes, since that market has been filled with W-VHS and truly amazing SVHS decks for quite some years now.
If the format is finally launched in the US and succeeds, we, in Europe, might get it too.
If it fails or if it is launched too late (as the standard DVHS was) - that'll probably be the death of all tape-based HD content...

My advice is: wait a little bit more and see what happens.

Constructive enough?
