Foreign affairs is only cool cause it's meaningless. All important issues -- except for some financial ones -- are settled domestically, and for First World countries we can omit the qualifier. Quick examples: If foreign affairs were half as important as we believe, Israel would have diplomatic relations with Palestine and Richard Nixon would still be president. You'll be a much stronger speaker if you can always find a way to describe the domestic pressures acting on foreign leaders (how the Israel lobby affects American policy or how the internal arrangements of the House of Saud contribute to Mideastern instability, to say nothing of economic dislocation in China).
