yup....found it. In The Harvest, Giles, describing the origin of vampires says...'The books tell the last demon to leave this reality fed off a human, mixed their blood. He was a human form posessed, infected by the demon's soul....'
Of course, this could mean that only that particular type of demon had (has?) a soul, but that doesn't make much sense to me. (It also implies that vampires have souls, just demon-souls as opposed to human-souls. This could go to explain the recentish changes in Spike. We already know that demons aren't intrinsically evil-eg Doyle,Lorne,Whistler etc. Going off my point now...sorry)
