There are many ways I can watch this season and force it all to make some kind of sense. I can say it's a character-driven show and that the characters are only a little bit out of alignment, that the events are sort of making sense but just not quite as well written in places.
However I get to a point where I don't want to bother. Why am I watching this? Buffy used to be about things--there was courage and unexpected strength and a chaotic streak of feminism. Now it is about very different things. And I get the distinct impression that they're just trying to shock and surprise us.
Buffy fights him off. They would never have her be unable to fight him off, but why are they putting her in that position in the first place? Why are they having her cry and plead? Why do they choose to tell this story this way? I can find ways why it fits the characters (although I have to work) but I can't find a reason or a theme that is worth a damn.
